The Art of Surreal Expressionism
I am a person who delves into the very fabric of existence; life has given beauty which should not be forgotten. I spend my time painting, composing music, and writing poetry. My paintings, music, and literature capture qualities of the dreamer’s world and I do my best to incorporate those other worldly heights that dreams bring to our lives.
I have entitled my labors in the arts Surreal Expressionism, in an attempt to summarize the overarching qualities of that art. I have studied the arts and feel I can now articulate my pursuits in those arts more accurately. Below I summarize the meaning of Surreal Expressionism to better communicate what I intend.
The word surreal, by definition, denotes a relationship to dreams, more specifically the irrationality of dreams. In my pursuits of the surreal I have come to theorize that dreams may be a product of our environment, and we live in an irrational world. However, if one were to imagine a world that was less irrational, and defined by a more logical relation to life, like beauty, perhaps our dreams would reflect that beauty.
Expressionists sought to convey emotions rather than an objective reality, and from my observations, they did so with form and color. Emotion, like dreams, may be created by the environment which surrounds us, and our typical environment is oppressive to the senses. If one were to live freer, and one were to be engaged with the profundity of a more beautiful world, perhaps we would have more enlightened emotions.
When those philosophies are combined, the outcome, in my thoughts, is Surreal Expressionism: an attempt to depict my dreams, possible dreams, through the lens of a world not ravaged by oppressive design, but rather one which is enlightened more by the profundity of its existence.
I graduated from State College of Florida with my Associates in the Arts focusing on Studio Art.
